Excellent fishing continues off Saugatuck right now with catches of 8-15 fish per trip. The largest average weight of spring Chinook salmon in many years is happening so far this season, with kings over 20lbs being taken. Lake Trout are mixed in along with steelhead beginning to show. There are occasional coho being taken which is late for this time of year.

Huge schools of baitfish are along the harbors and are keeping the fish close. Best setups fishing in the bait are Blood Run Coppers in 32lb at 150, 200 and 250 right now. Blood Run wire divers both up high and down low are taking the biggest kings by far. Downriggers with 11” Dreamweaver Paddles and Action Flies are the most consistent producers for trout and mid-sized kings.

Silver Streak spoons on the coppers in Orange Killer, Pink Panties, Hot Lobster, Green Dolphin and Lemonberry are all working excellent.

Now is the time to book your trip for what will prove to be the largest year class of Chinook by weight that we have seen in decades!

Wire divers slowed the last few trips, kind of a weird bite being so heavy on the copper. Riggers are taking a few shots as well.

Big blow this weekend will get things cranking and should push the kings inside and compact some water, expecting action to bust wide open at that point.

Beautiful weather and great fishing otherwise…typical May!

The mini-heat wave we had this past week is finally kicking things into a higher gear. Pounding the fish hard right now, with more and more kings cruising around each day, and big ones. We took these two today, one tipped over 20lbs. Had several king rips and nobody home, typical of early kings just coming in from deep.

Cant say enough about the new Blood Run lines we are running right now. The purple smoke tournament downrigger line is as tough as it gets. Have had a couple of instances where we were sure the line would get cut, and it came away clean.

And the old standby 32lb coppers are huge for us right now as well, taking shot after shot on both kings and trout.

None of this would be possible if we didn’t have the right baits on the right rods. As always, our spring program is dominated by Silver Streak spoons. We don’t get fancy, though we are sure some of the new ones are great, we just pound the old school standby lemonberrys and orange chilly’s and they carry us over the finish line every time.

Its only going to get more and more intense out there each day as we move further into May, call now, it’s time!

Four man limit on Lake Trout and a nice stray King today…first trip out in quite a while. Ferocious weather this season has kept most of the fleet at the dock. When you can make it out it has been pretty tough to nail the fish down.

We worked a really small sliver of water today that was constantly on the move. The fish were in it thick, and despite leaving the dock at 9 am we still managed to be productive.

Hot setups, as they are every spring, are regular and magnum Silver Streaks in Lemonberry, Orange Chilly Willy and Jerry Lee. Every rod went multiple times. Riggers were solid, wire divers all went, but the studs of the day would have to be the 200 and 250 Blood Run 32lb coppers. We pulled the 150’s and 100’s, only the 150 went once.

Beautiful weather for sure, we needed it. We expect a record May due to the fact that the fish have been pent up far too long offshore. When they get here in May, it is going to be hair on fire!

The 2013 charter season is upon us! Decent numbers of coho, brown trout and lake trout are being taken now, the water is slowly warming nearshore. Heavy rains this week will get action fired up. Average catches in the 10-12 fish per trip range, with a good mix of all species.

Still waiting on the weather to co-operate, north winds are stirring up the south end of the lake pretty regularly. Expecting fishing to bust loose at any moment, and May will be a record month for kings.

Book now to get in on the action, prime dates are filling fast!
